Silver Lining video premiers!!

8 Jun

“Silver Lining”-Kev Choice feat. Mistah F.A.B., Kevin Allen, Brookfield Deuce, Mani Draper directed & edited by Salvatore Fullmore additional footage by Silence Dem All & Kev Choice From the Album Social Distancing Kev Choice is a Bay Area establishment. A prolific Oakland artist, Choice is an MC, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist; he is also a music teacher at the Oakland School for the Arts and a governor in the Recording Academy’s San Francisco chapter. While 2020 looks as different for Choice’s best-laid plans as it has for most of us, he’s making the best of what has been made available to him. Shelving an EP release with his new band, Black London, for the time being, Choice had opted to collaborate with a collective of Bay Area rappers for an album entitled Social Distancing. Having dropped on 10 April, Choice is joined by Mistah F.A.B., Kevin Allen, Martin Luther, Jennifer Johns, Lalin St. Juste, members of Black London and more on the new LP. On “Silver Lining”, Choice collaborates with the aforementioned F.A.B. and Allen, alongside Brookfield Deuce and Mani Draper. The MCs form a quintet, each getting a step up to the mic to share a verse that reflects on their life amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each beat takes a positive spin—a refreshing twist in light of the world at this moment. The artists reflect on issues that are affecting many of us, from working at home, to self-isolation, religion, and parenting in the midst of quarantine, and more. Its music video is edited and directed by Salvatore Fullmore, with additional footage by Silence Dem All and Choice himself, offering a picturesque look at Oakland at-present. Choice reflects, “With all this going on in our nation right now, it’s important to listen to voices, especially voices of Black men, who’ve endured so much, but can still provide very introspective, positive and real perspectives on our situations dealing with the pandemic, racism, and many other issues we face. This song offers thoughts from five gifted Bay Area MCs on how to find light in the darkest situations and hope in very dire situations.”

Kev Choice and bassist Ketih Snodgrass recently did a stripped down version of “Take Me To Your Leaders” from his album “Social Distancing” as a submission to NPR’s “Tiny Desk” contest.

“This song was written to express my sentiments around how the leadership of our country has in many ways failed us during this Covid-19 crisis. .I imagined what would happen if aliens came from another planet and ask to be taken to our leaders. What would they say? I also to express many of my anxieties, thoughts, and concerns, around shelter in place and how it’s effecting my daily life.”

Kev Choice releases new album “Social Distancing”

26 Apr
“An artist role is to reflect the times-Nina Simone”’ Days after the initial calls of social distancing, and hours before the Bay Area was the first place in the US ordered to “shelter in place”, pianist/M.C./producer Kev Choice was inspired to create a project to reflect the new realities of life in a world impacted so drastically and rapidly by Covid-19. Taking equipment from his studio into his living room apartment, Kev began creating songs, reaching out to other artist, musicians, and producers similarly quarantined, and expressing the many feelings he was going through from loss of gigs, feelings of isolation, questioning of government response, and looking for glimmers of inspiration during these difficult times. In a 3-4 week span, Kev collaborated with over 15 artists including Mistah F.A.B., Martin Luther, Jennifer Johns, Kevin Allen, Lalin St. Juste of The Seshen, DJ D-Sharp, Drew Banga, Elujay, as well as Kev’s newly formed band BLACK LONDON, musicians and producers from the Bay Area to Los Angeles. An EP turned into an album as more collaborators got involved, and more changes in society began to affect daily lives. Stretching genres from hip-hop, jazz, soul, and R&B, Kev opens up allowing him and his guests to provide inspiration and give a poignant expression of life in times of the Covid-19 crisis era. Kev says “social distancing is about how we can come together and connect even more during these times, and how we need inspiration and collaboration more than ever. Music is a perfect vehicle to showcase and express that. I felt an urgency and necessity to get this music out to the people right now, as we all proceed and deal with a new way of life.”

Kev Choice-No Worries new video!

6 Apr

As feelings of fear and anxiety overcome our society dealing with the new normals, effects of COVID-19, and “sheltering in place”, Kev Choice processes isolation while seeking ways to overcome the stress of being quarantined, the dramatic effects on the faltering economy, and social distancing from community, family, and in relationships.

“Dedicated to those in community finding themselves struggling in various ways during this time, those who are out helping others in need, those at home taking care of there families, those feeling alone, those in the hospitals taking care of the sick, those finding new ways to love themselves and connect with loved ones, those missing their loved ones, the creators, the artist, those seeking inspiration, the businesses owners, those who’ve lost their jobs, the youth who miss school and friends, all of us. Let us find ways to connect, inspire, and know we will persevere, together, as a society. Have faith. No worries. We are guided by the angels from high up above, now we can be as close as we never was, pray to God to protect us from whatever comes. No worries.”-Kev
