KEV CHOICE RELEASES NEW ALBUM“LOVE & REVOLUTION”
Oakland-based composer, pianist, and emcee releases a melodic, impassioned call-to-action with his first release on Zion I’s Mind Over Matter Records.
OAKLAND, CA – With his third studio-album, and first release on new label Mind Over Matter, Kev Choice delivers his newest project: Love & Revolution. The long-time pianist, M.C., producer, composer and band leader having spent the last decade working as a sideman with some of the Bay Area’s biggest artists, nowsets his sights on the center stage with his third official album. The 14-track album combines Choice’s Hip-Hop, jazzy, soulful and uplifting sensibilities with help from fellow Bay Area artist Netta Brielle, Locksmith, Trackademicks, 1-O.A.K., Jennifer Johns, Viveca Hawkins, Jeff Turner and his band, Kev Choice Ensemble.
“This was my attempt to contribute music and content to people out there fighting for social change.” States Kev about the project. “Being involved with protest and organizing myself, I want to make music that sounds current and fresh, but still delivers a solid message.”
Known in Bay Area music circles as the “go-to” pianist and music director, Choice has spent the last fifteen years producing, performing or music directing with a laundry list of artists including: Michael Franti and Spearhead, Lyrics Born, Too $hort, Zion I, The Coup, Ledisi, Dwele, Martin Luther, Amel Larrieux, Omar, Souls of Mischief, Goapele, and Lauryn Hill. With Love & Revolution, Choice combines his musical training with hip-hop and R&B artists to create a sonically cohesive album addressing some of the most polarizing social issues of our time.
“Kev Choice is one of those rare musicians, who is able to bring divergent styles together and fuse them into stunning new forms” says Mind Over Matter Records founder Zumbi. “I am excited to see where his path leads. This is only the beginning for Kev, there are no limits for a man with this much raw talent.”
“Noose” is an urgent posse cut that comes off like a call to arms for those on the fence about the cold reality of the American streets. With production recalling a sweaty jazz and funk club, Codany Holiday brings it home with a syrupy sweet chorus about the trials of being trapped in the system. “Too High” is an uplifting tune that goes hard in the club, while still managing to express Kev’s unique sensibilities. “Oscar’s Revenge” and “Blues for Blueford”, both inspired by victims of police killings in Oakland, California are two stand out instrumental tracks on the project. One is a fusion of jazz and drum and bass, the other a somber piano solo piece.
Love and Revolution is a musical exploration of social justice and inequality in today’s America, and a reminder of how love and the fight for change should stay on the forefront of our minds.
The album is available now on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Spotify, and other music outlets!
